Eskrima and Doce Pares
Eskrima, also known as Arnis or Kali, is an indigeneous Filipino Martial Art which utilizes weapons such as sticks (single and double), knife/daggers, espada y daga (sword and dagger), bangkaw (staff), mano-mano (empty hands: kicking and punching), and dumog (grappling) - the Filipino way. It is a complete system by itself.
Doce Pares is an assemblage of various styles. Styles that were brought and introduced into the organization by the founding masters in 1932. To the credit of the leaders of the organization, these diverse and often contrasting styles and skills were all successfully integrated and passed on to the next generation of Doce Pares adherents. The following styles each comprise a portion of the group's training curriculum:
The Close range style (corto) of Lorenzo and Teodoro Saavendra
The Medium range style of Jesus Cui
The Espada y Daga and Corto Orihinal style of Felimon Canete
The Long Range style of Yoling Canete and Vincent Carin
In the later years, the Corto style of Ciriaco Canete and "Pangamut" of Maximo Canete.
News
29th September, Sat - Doce Pares has been invited to the SOAS Freshers' Fayre by the SOAS Filipino Society spearheaded by Alvin Carpio whom we met at the 'Meet and Greet' event last 21st September at the Philippine Embassy. Doce Pares performed a short demo and announced that there is an existing Kali Society at the said University. Many other martial arts groups also performed which made the day very interesting.
30th September, Sun - The Danny Guba Doce Pares team stormed the British WEKAF Invitational with a good 15 strong team of fighters. The team consisted of mainly Filipinos, which is the biggest in British WEKAF history.
The highlight of the day was the team event where Doce Pares, yet again, had the biggest number of teams. There were three fighters in each of the three teams, who gave the opposing teams a good beating.
The DGDP team was backed and cheered by fellow DG Doce Pares team mates and by those who couldn't make the fights, and also by Filipino film crew FilMeFilm TV. Inspite of only getting 1 gold, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes the team still did a great job in their first ever tournament.
GM Danny, inspite of not being able to attend the event, is extremely proud of all his Doce Pares students who have only been training for 2-3 months and still were able to fight competitively against more experienced fighters, including members of the British Team. He is training all of them personally in preparation for the upcoming WEKAF Championships this November.
Overall, the event was great, well-organized and fun; but the judging could have been better. We'd like to thank JKD Northampton, United Arnis Fighters and Kapatiran Arnis for hosting the event well. Team DG Doce Pares are looking forward to their next tournament on 4th November for the British WEKAF Championships.
1st October - A new venue in Mile End has been opened in replacement to the Mulberry (Whitechapel/Shadwell) venue. The Central Foundation Girls' School boasts a massive sports court with excellent facilities: well-sprung floors, a gym, a dance studio and shower rooms.
4th October - The new Thursday class in Euston started with a bang when Cebuano Kevin Angeles attended the demo. Unfortunately, GM Danny wasn't able to make it but attends Sunday sparring sessions to train tournament competitors.
18th October - Doce Pares had a meeting with the Deputy Chief of Mission Rey Catapang of the Philippine Embassy regarding backing and support and possibly funding for the promotion of Filipino Martial Arts as a whole. Mr Catapang was quite pleased that representatives from such aspect of Philippine Culture has finally turned up and shown passion to promote the Philippine martial arts. There will be many future events and activities in association with the Philippine Embassy. This is a big achievement for all FMA-ers, especially those based in the UK!
October 2007 - Due to lack of interest and response, we have decided to reset the Doce Pares Forums and use it privately among Ermar Alexander's group. Current subscribers to the Forums will unfortunately be removed from it unless a member of Ermar Alexander's group. Apologies for the inconvenience.
