Ermar 'Alex' Alexander began his Doce Pares training in 1999 with GM Danny Guba. Through the years, he progressed and eventually became a member of the British Team - being the only Filipino until 2007. Within the 9 years of competing, he has won multitudes of Sparring and Sayaw (Forms) tournaments (2000-2009).

Ironically, Alex never heard of Eskrima until one of his English friends told him that there was a Filipino martial art. He has tried different martial art styles before, but eversince he started training with GM Danny, he was hooked and focused on Doce Pares Eskrima only. He has been training with GM Danny weekly eversince for the past decade.

A year into his training, GM Danny encouraged him to compete in tournaments to further understand the art and get into the fun part of Eskrima. Alex enjoyed the adrenalin rush and looked forward to his suceeding fights. Eventually, he got the 'knack' of it and excelled in the sport, becoming a world titlist (three times!). Many have told him to quit competing while he is at his peak. But Alex isn't chasing titles. He is competing for the love of the game. Now, he is training others - his students - to get into the fun of Eskrima as well. He teaches the full aspect of the art - from sticks to knife defense to empty hands and to the most understated, Sayaw (Forms).

Alex says: "Competing in tournaments have shown to me that it is not easy to apply fancy techniques in a fight. The simplest techniques are actually the most realistic ones you can use in a fight, whether real or competition/games. Your senses are blurred, your heart pumps, your muscles constrict and adrenaline rushes to your whole body. All your, even focused, mind can think of is how to get out of a situation as quickly and as safely as possible. Being a martial artist doesn't guarantee a 100% chance of survival, but it gives a martial artist a better chance of surviving a confrontation from an untrained attacker. And this chance is slightly increased when one has tested his skills in the ring with a skilled fighter. Will I ever stop competing? I will keep on fighting while I'm still enjoying the game."

Alex now dreams of promoting Doce Pares, and the Filipino martial arts, primarily among the British-Filipino community and the British/European public in general.

Alex is also the founder of the Seni Eskrima Championships and KOMBATA Limited Armour Championships. (Copyright 2008. All Rights Reserved.)
